National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene

Longest-running Yiddish theatre In America brings its popular musical revue to Dayton for one performance only

The Traveling Troupe of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, the longest-running Yiddish theatre in America, will bring its popular “Mama’s Loshn Kugel” revue to Dayton for one performance only on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Engineers Club of Dayton. The performance is sponsored by the Yiddish Club of the Dayton Jewish Community Center, with generous support from the Dayton Jewish community.

The revue, performed in Yiddish with English and Russian supertitles, includes classic songs and sketches from such luminaries in the Yiddish Theatre as Sholom Aleichem, Abraham Goldfaden, Molly Picon and others. The troupe is made up of dedicated young actors, singers and musicians who are all in their 20s and 30s.

For more information or tickets, which are $10/adult or $8/student and include a reception after the show, contact Karen Steiger at 937-853-0372.

The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, which the New York Post calls “one of the city’s most remarkable cultural institutions,” is America’s sole surviving professional Yiddish theatre and the longest continuously producing Yiddish theatre company in the world. First established in1915, the Folksbiene Theatre preserves, promotes and develops Yiddish theatre for present and future generations. It is one of just four professional Yiddish theatre companies in operation today; the others are in Montreal, Warsaw and Tel Aviv.

Temple Beth Sholom will celebrate Tu b’Shevat with a special seder on January 29 at 7:30. This is an excellent family event, so bring the children! During the seder, we give thanks for the many tree fruits and nuts as we celebrate the birthday of the trees and the growing season in Israel.

Woodside Cemetery - Temple Beth Sholom Section

submitted by Richard Isroff, Cemetery Committee

In 1986 Temple Beth Sholom acquired 47 double monument lots and 14 single marker lots in a section indicated as Section 15 at Woodside Cemetery. This is located at the intersection of Verity Parkway and Fourteenth Avenue in Middletown, Ohio.

It is a mitzvah to be buried in a Jewish cemetery, to be sure your family needs are met for now and the future I will be available to meet with you and discuss this personally.

Our arrangement includes perpetual care. We have secured the current value and will review the section, in private at your convenience.

A double plot Monument site is $3200.
A single marker site is $850.

Thanksgiving Food Baskets

As we approach the Thanksgiving season we are again reminded of those less fortunate. The goal of this program is to provide food for families in the Middletown area.

Bob and Sharon Flagel are chairmen this year. We will be meeting at Frisch’s at Towne Mall on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 8am for breakfast. From there we will be picking up all of the food at Kroger at Towne Mall. Kroger is putting everything together for us so we won’t need to shop on Friday, Nov. 20. We will go from Kroger to Temple to organize, with the help of the Sunday School children. Deliveries are expected to be ready by 11:00.

Donations for this project are needed. Checks should be made out to Temple Beth Sholom and mailed to Sharon Flagel.

On Sunday, November 22, we will meet at the Temple at 9:00 A.M. to begin organizing the food for distribution. If you have a van, pickup truck or SUV capable of delivering the food, we would appreciate your assistance. As in previous years, we will assign everyone who wants to participate in the delivery and provide directions.

This has always been a worthwhile and rewarding program and we hope that you will participate.
